--Know Your Joe Biography--
Relationships matter.

The community of Monserrate straddles a ridge deep in the Cordillera Central mountain range. At the top of the road is a brick church that houses a shrine to the Virgen de Monserrate, a statue of a black Virgin Mary.

The Monserrate residents are smallholder farmers, most of whom farm under 10 acres. Many of them formed the Grupo Asociativo Productores del Nuevo Mileno (PROAGROMIL) to better their position in the coffee growing world.

Here’s where the relationships start. In 2005, our importer Atlas Coffee visited the Monserrate community. The importer was so impressed about their potential they signed a mutual agreement to be the only distributor of the Monserrate coffee. The farmers are paid a premium over the internal pricing and what the markets are paying, and each year invest into bettering the coffee quality. Golden Pine has been offering the Monserrate coffee now for five years and will continue to carry it for quite some time.
